Substances involved

Risk profile

Cannabis can amplify and destabilize the effects of psychedelics — both psychotomimetically and in terms of anxiety and panic. No acute physical emergency, but psychological crises are more common.

Acute emergency scenarios

Cannabis and psychedelics are often combined — typically during the “comeup” or “comedown”. The pharmacological interaction isn’t fully understood, but subjective and clinical experiences are clear:

  • Amplification of the psychedelic effect — hallucinations become more intense, sometimes overwhelming
  • Increased tendency toward anxiety and panic — especially in people with predispositions
  • Delusional content more common than without cannabis
  • Re-triggering of old cannabis side effects (paranoia)

Acute physical danger is low. Psychological crises — anxiety, paranoia, bad trip — are more common than with psychedelics alone.

Practical notes:

  • If you have little experience with both substances: use them separately, get to know the tolerance and effects first
  • Keep the THC dose low, especially if cannabis is added late in the trip
  • If you have a history of cannabis paranoia: take psychedelics without cannabis
  • Set & setting matter more than with psychedelics alone

In a psychological crisis, see “Panic Crisis” and “Psychotic Episode”. Trip-sitting principles: validate, don’t contradict, calm environment, remind them of the substance.
